San Francisco Street Food Festival 2013

August 11, 2013 by Tim

The San Francisco Street For Festival is on Saturday, August 17, 2013!

We had such a wonderful time at last year’s “San Francisco Street Food Festival” and are really excited that it is already time to do it again! This is hands down one of the best food events of the year. La Cocina is the organization that puts it on. If you would like to read about this great organization and see some more pictures from last year event you can find it here. In addition to the Saturday festival, La Cocina held it first ‘Night Market’ in 2012, and we’re happy to see that it is back again this year on Friday, August 16th. If you are planning on going you can get all the information you need from the festival website here. This year there is a nifty free app that you can get here to make the most of the day. As a seasoned festival attendee, I am taking the liberty of jotting down a few tips for you if you are going for the first time, along with some pictures from last year.

Gather a small posse of friends to go with you. This way you can eat and try more things. You will be able to splinter off to gather food from as many vendors as you can line up for, then meet back in a pre-disclosed spot and share the deliciousness.

Wear Sunscreen! It is usually sunny in the mission.

Buy the passport in advance! It will save you time and money. Passport “dollars” can be used to buy food and drinks, and the best part is they can be shared. Remember you are supporting a good cause, so don’t be stingy. Otherwise, bring cash as the vendors don’t take cards.

Have a game plan. As you can see by the list of vendors and the menu below, it is impossible to try it all. Narrow the list down and hold out for the food that peaks your interest. Be sure to pace yourself. Remember…walk, eat, drink, walk, repeat.

Hydrate. This shouldn’t be hard here but remember to include a little H2O in the mix.

Don’t drive. It is a short walk from the 24th street BART station. However, the festival is six city blocks so plan on wearing comfortable shoes.

Arrive early. It gets increasingly crowded as the day wears on, so arriving early is not a bad idea.

Relax and enjoy the day. There are lines but for the most part they move fast. You never know who you are going to meet at the festival while waiting in line…it might turn out to be your new best friend. Everyone is there because they love good food and it’s always a fun crowd.

I hope I have talked you into attending this year’s San Francisco Street Food Festival. If you are still on the fence, take a minute to check out the list of vendors and their enticing offerings. I will be back to share some pics and hopefully have some stories to tell when I have recovered from my food coma. See you at the festival!
